What is FSSAI registration?

Any business that deals with food products needs to obtain, apart from other licenses, an FSSAI (Food Safety and Standard Authority of India) registration for food process and distribution. Registration with FSSAI aims to keep a tab on the quality and standards of food in India and to prevent adulteration.

Which businesses need to register for FSSAI?

Any entity which is in the food business needs to have an FSSAI Licence. If you are into the procurement (import), manufacture, processing, packaging, storage and distribution of food items, you need to have an FSSAI registration.

FSSAI Licence comprises of a 14 digit registration number that needs to be displayed in all your food items.

Types of FSSAI registration

Basic Registration

Small businesses with an annual turnover of below Rs 12 lakh are required to obtain an FSSAI basic registration, which can be upgraded to state licence later as you expand your business.

State Licence

If you are managing a mid-sized company with an annual turnover of less than Rs 20 crore, you need to obtain an FSSAI State Licence.

Central Licence

If the annual turnover of your company is Rs 20 crore and above, you must apply for an FSSAI Central Licence. Such licence is also required if you supply food products to government offices or when you are engaged in import and export of food items.

Process of obtaining FSSAI Licence

Documents required to obtain FSSAI Licence

  • Declaration form confirming all details mentioned are true.
  • Authority letter authorising us to apply for an FSSAI Central Licence on your behalf.
  • In case you own food factory or premises, please send us your property ownership papers.
  • In case you are functioning from a rented property, please attach a copy of the rent agreement.
  • Self-declared copy of the Food Safety Management System Plan.
  • Copy of the power or water bill of your business place.
  • Copy of the Aaadhar card of the proprietor or director of the company.

In case yours is a food manufacturing unit, send the following additional documents:

  • Blue print or layout of the food processing unit.
  • List of all the machinery units.
  • List of the food products to be manufactured.
  • Pesticide residue reports of water.
